WellSpan Health Neurosciences and Pain Center

WellSpan Health provides a number of neurological services including Adult and Pediatric Neurology, Spine/Physiatry, Neurosurgery and Pain Management. In an effort to improve the care they provide to their patients, WellSpan is in the process of building a new facility to house all of these services under one roof.

The new Neurosciences and Pain Center was designed based on LEAN principles, LEAN principles originate from the Toyota Production System where they were used to maximize value and decrease waste. In the healthcare industry the same principles are being applied but with a focus on increasing staff efficiency, eliminating waste, and reducing patient wait times.

Reducing patient travel distance was a top priority for this project considering the mobility challenges many of the patients face. The new facility provides direct routes from the check-in areas to the exam rooms with color coded finishes to direct them to the appropriate areas. A streamlined check-out process was adopted by allowing paperwork to take place in the exam room. Separate in-board and out-board corridors make entering and exiting seamless and maintains HIPPA standards by keeping the patient and staff work areas separate.
